SOUTH SALT LAKE — Southbound I-15 lanes reopened near South Salt Lake after a gravel spill that caused "major delays," transportation officials said.

The spill occurred between 3300 South and 4500 South on Wednesday afternoon, the Utah Highway Patrol said.

Photos from the incident showed red dirt and gravel spread across the road covering at least three lanes in places.

Delays continued while crews cleared the lanes, but traffic in the area had returned to normal as of 4:30 p.m., according to the Utah Department of Transportation.
