SILVER SUMMIT, Summit County — Police have identified the woman who was killed and the man hospitalized following a chase with police that ended in a crash on Wednesday.
Daisha Reynolds, 19, of Salt Lake City, was ejected when the vehicle fleeing from police rolled, according to the sheriff's office. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver, Charles Caster, 22, also of Salt Lake City, was also ejected, according to police. He was flown by medical helicopter to a Salt Lake hospital in critical condition, where he remained hospitalized Thursday.
The incident forced the closure of U.S. 40 on Wednesday near Silver Summit as multiple agencies, including the Utah Attorney General's Office, West Valley police and Park City police investigated the crash.
It began as a stolen vehicle and car burglary investigation. A car was reported stolen from a parking lot in Hideout, Wasatch County, just after 9 a.m. About an hour later, a resident in Midway called police to report someone was trying to break into a vehicle. The burglars in that case drove off in a car that matched the description of the vehicle stolen from Hideout, according to a statement from the Summit County Sheriff's Office.

A Wasatch County sheriff's deputy searching for that vehicle spotted it on state Route 113. The driver, Caster, refused to pull over as the deputy chased it through Midway, according to the statement. Twice the deputy lost sight of the car. It was spotted again by officers from several agencies on River Road and they pursued it onto U.S. 40 where the fleeing car accelerated to over 95 mph, the sheriff's office said.
A Utah Highway Patrol trooper deployed tire spikes on U.S. 40, slowing the car down. A Summit County sheriff's deputy then deployed a second set of spikes a few miles later. The driver of the fleeing vehicle swerved in an attempt to avoid the spike strip, lost control of his car and crashed, the sheriff's office said.
No officers were injured in the incident.
