PROVO — Brigham Young University has asked all students, faculty and staff to report their COVID-19 vaccination status, but the school isn't requiring all people on campus to get vaccinated.
Instead, the data on vaccination status will help university officials make decisions about policies and protocols for the upcoming fall semester, such as mask requirements.
All students, faculty and staff are asked to report their vaccination status as soon as possible. Utah County, where BYU is located, has been designated as a high transmission area for COVID-19.
"The increasing prevalence of the new COVID-19 delta variant is concerning and BYU takes seriously the physical health and safety of our campus community, including those who are immunocompromised," the school's website states on a frequently asked questions page about the reporting process. "BYU will take a scaled approach to disease prevention that corresponds to vaccination rates among the campus community."
In preparation for fall semester, BYU is asking all students, faculty & staff to report their COVID-19 vaccination status ASAP.

Data about the BYU community vaccination rates will help inform fall COVID-19 protocol decisions, such as mask requirements.
People who don't report their vaccination status by August 19 will have restricted access to myBYU, the university's academic portal website. People who report that they are not vaccinated will still have access to the site. If your vaccination status changes, you can update your information through welcome-back.byu.edu.
University officials pointed out that while vaccination isn't required for students and staff, it may be required for some travel, research or other university-affiliated programs, depending on regulations and guidelines.
"BYU strongly encourages but does not require every employee or student to receive the COVID-19 vaccination to be on campus in Provo this upcoming semester," the university said.
