CHARLESTON, Wasatch County — A couple from Arizona that died Sunday afternoon at Deer Creek Reservoir has now been identified, police said.
Preliminary information suggests David D., and Catherine McMillan from Chandler, Arizona, drowned, but the official cause of death will be determined by the State Medical Examiner's Office, Wasatch County Sheriff's Office said in a Facebook post.
The 72-year-old man entered the water to swim with a family member Sunday morning, and when they started to struggle in the water, Catherine, his 59-year-old wife, joined them and tried to assist. None of the three was wearing a life jacket.
Utah State Parks officials said a passerby with EMS training helped retrieve the three swimmers, and both Catherine and David were facedown in the water. The group was taken to the boat ramp, and first responders continued administering CPR and first aid.
The couple was transported to nearby hospitals where they were pronounced dead shortly after arriving. Their family member is expected to recover fully, officials say.
