SALT LAKE CITY — At least five people died in four unrelated vehicle accidents this weekend.
"Our hearts and prayers go out to the families of the victims," Moab Police Sgt. Braydon Palmer said after two men were killed on a the Moab Rim Jeep Trail on Saturday. "May you find peace through this time."
Two Arizona men were killed when their vehicle rolled off a cliff, Palmer reported. He said the exact cause of the accident is still under investigation, but witnesses reported a possible mechanical issue with the vehicle.
The men's names were not released, but Moab Police Sgt. Braydon Palmer said they were 56 and 47 years old and both died at the scene.
Another vehicle rollover on Saturday claimed the life of a driver in Logan Canyon.
Just before 6 p.m., a truck holding two men was headed west on U.S. 89 when it lost control, crossed the eastbound lane and rolled into the Logan River, landing upside down.
The Utah Department of Public Safety reports the passenger was able to get out and received minor injuries. The driver, however, died at the scene. Early investigation indicates that the driver may have been impaired.
His name was not immediately released.
Another man died after his four-wheeler went over a 30-foot embankment in the Five Mile Pass area of Tooele early Sunday. A search and rescue crew was called after the man did not return to his nearby camp, where he was staying with family. He allegedly left on the vehicle without his phone and was not wearing a helmet.
Tooele County Sheriff Paul Wimmer said the man, whose name was not released, took a wrong turn in the dark and didn't expect the drop off. Wimmer said the machine likely landed on top of the man, killing him instantly.
Furthermore, a Salt Lake City man died Sunday morning after his motorcycle crashed with an SUV at 1300 South and 700 East. The driver of the SUV was not injured and was "understandably upset about the situation," according to Salt Lake Police Lt. Lisa Pascadlo.
Despite efforts of a passerby, as well as paramedics, the motorcyclist died at the scene.
