SALT LAKE CITY – Some parents say they've struggled to figure out how to help their children become technologically savvy with smartphones and stay safe from the dangers of social media and online access.

But one Utah County startup hopes to offer a compromise to digital disconnection altogether.

"Every parent in America is dealing with these challenges in trying to find a solution that's safe but practical as well," said Bill Brady, co-founder and CEO of Troomi Wireless.

Brady believes the practical solution is a phone offered by startup Troomi.

That's his new company getting ready to roll out Samsung devices — phones that children will actually want to use — but it's very different than just handing your elementary or middle schooler a fully functional smartphone.

"We can give kids a safe experience that enables them to have access to tools to excel in school, to nurture their hobbies, discover new passions and really achieve their full potential," Brady said. "It's our mission. That's why we built this operating system."

If your kids have ever used a Gabb phone, you know this kind of technology exists — and Brady co-founded that company.

He hopes Troomi can take it up a notch with phones that are a lot closer to the smartphones adults use but still offer that safety they want for their children.

You can't buy one yet, but preorders are available in certain zip codes
