MILLCREEK — One of two men who police say was involved in firing six rounds at a convenience store clerk after one of their bank cards was declined was arrested on Friday.
Unified police say the 7-Eleven clerk was extremely lucky that all six shots somehow missed him.
Nevertheless, Jackson Baka Issa, 20, was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of attempted murder, obstructing justice and six counts of shooting at a person.
The incident happened about 6:30 a.m. Friday at 4051 S. State in Millcreek. Two men entered the store and brought a few items to the counter to purchase.
Issa's bank card was declined three times, according to a police affidavit, leading to an argument with the cashier. The two men stood at the counter for an estimated 10 minutes.
As the two men were leaving the store, one of them "produced a handgun and fired six rounds at the cashier," nearly hitting him several times, the affidavit states. The clerk told police one man "pointed the gun directly at his head and fired."
The clerk said the same gunman "then tracked him with the gun as he was trying to find cover and fired again. (The gunman) then fired several more times in the direction of the cashier," police wrote in the affidavit.
Detectives used store surveillance video to track down the car the two men drove away in and arrested Issa at his residence. However, he "refused to give us the name of suspect 1 (the gunman) or any information to help us identify and arrest suspect 1," according to the affidavit.
A search warrant was served on Issa's home and police reported seizing two guns.
The affidavit noted that Issa "has a criminal history of weapons, including a shots fired incident in Salt Lake City" on Feb. 5.
