OGDEN — Police have identified a woman who they say was shot and killed by her ex-boyfriend in the parking lot of a busy Ogden grocery store Saturday.
The ex-boyfriend then engaged in a standoff with police, authorities said. The standoff ended when police said the man suspected in the fatal shooting shot himself. He was taken to a hospital and remained in critical condition Saturday evening, according to Ogden Police Lt. Tyler Ziegler.
The chain of events began about 1:15 p.m. Officers responded to reports of shots fired outside of a Smith's grocery store located at 1485 S. Harrison Blvd.
Ziegler said the man, whose name and age weren't immediately released, confronted his ex-girlfriend in the parking lot outside of the store. A 41-year-old woman was shot and killed.
On Monday, the woman was identified as Mindee Lavell Elmore, according to a news release from Ogden police.
The man fled the scene after the shooting but was quickly identified and located in the front yard of a home in the 900 block of Maple Street, according to Ziegler. He added that it led to a standoff with Ogden Metro SWAT that lasted several hours before the man shot himself.
The place where the man was located at was less than 4 miles south of the site of the shooting. Officials with the Ogden Police Department and the Weber-Morgan Homicide Task Force were investigating the chain of events that unfolded Saturday.
People who were affected by the shooting are asked to call the Ogden Police Department's victim advocates at either 801-629-8246 or 801-629-8245, Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., a news release from the department said.
Police didn't release any other details about the shooting on Monday. The investigation is ongoing.
