SALT LAKE CITY — Utah's number of COVID-19 cases increased by 383 on Tuesday, with 15 more deaths and 23,950 vaccinations reported, according to the Utah Department of Health.
Twelve of the deaths occurred before March 1 but were still being investigated by state medical examiners, the health department said.
Health officials now estimate there are 10,536 active cases of COVID-19 in Utah. The rolling seven-day average number of positive cases per day is now at 443, according to the health department. The positive test rate per day for that time period reported with the "people over people" method is now 7.8%. The positive test rate per day seven-day average calculated with the "test over test" method is now 4%.
There are 131 COVID-19 patients currently hospitalized in Utah, including 49 in intensive care, state data shows. About 64% of intensive care unit beds in Utah are now occupied, including about 66% of ICU beds in the state's 16 referral hospitals. About 47% of non-ICU hospital beds are now occupied, state data shows.
A total of 1,178,728 vaccine doses have been administered in the state, up from 1,154,778 on Monday. A total of 780,081 Utahns have now received at least one vaccine dose, and 429,306 are fully vaccinated, health department data shows. A total of 1,323,050 vaccine doses have been shipped to Utah so far.
Utah Gov. Spencer Cox announced in a tweet Monday afternoon that two hours of administrative leave would be authorized for all state employees who schedule and receive the COVID-19 vaccine. The governor also encouraged all Utah businesses to follow suit.
The new numbers indicate a 0.1% increase in positive cases since Monday. Of the 2,340,071 people tested for COVID-19 in Utah so far, 16.3% have tested positive for the disease. The total number of tests conducted since the beginning of the pandemic is now at 4,124,865, up 15,624 since Monday. Of those, 6,022 were tests of people who had not previously been tested for COVID-19, the health department said.
The 15 deaths reported Tuesday were:
- A Cache County man who was between the ages of 45 and 64 and was hospitalized when he died
- A Davis County man who was between the ages of 65 and 84 and was a resident of a long-term care facility
- Two Davis County men who were over the age of 85 and were residents of long-term care facilities
- A Garfield County man who was over the age of 85 and was a resident of a long-term care facility
- Two Salt Lake County women who were between the ages of 65 and 84 and were residents of long-term care facilities
- A Salt Lake County man who was between the ages of 65 and 84 and was not hospitalized when he died
- Two Salt Lake County women who were between the ages of 65 and 84 and were not hospitalized when they died
- A Utah County woman who was between the ages of 65 and 84 and was a resident of a long-term care facility
- A Utah County woman who was over the age of 85 and was a resident of a long-term care facility
- A Utah County man who was over the age of 85 and was not hospitalized when he died
- A Utah County man who was between the ages of 45 and 64 and was not hospitalized when he died
- A Weber County woman who was between the ages of 65 and 84 and was a resident of a long-term care facility
Tuesday's totals give Utah 382,171 total confirmed cases, with 15,323 total hospitalizations and 2,077 total deaths from the disease. A total of 369,558 Utah COVID-19 cases are now being considered recovered, according to the health department.
Cox and Lt. Gov. Deidre Henderson are scheduled to provide a COVID-19 pandemic update at a news conference at 11 a.m. Thursday.
