CHARLESTON, Wasatch County — Officials on Sunday identified the 17-year-old boy who died in a three-car crash that took place east of Deer Creek Reservoir on New Year's Day.
Jackson A. Keate was from Highland, authorities said.
Shortly before 1:30 p.m. on U.S. Highway 189 about a mile south of Charleston, a northbound Honda Civic drifted off the right side of a narrow section of the highway, according to a news release from the Utah Highway Patrol. Keate, who was the only person in the Civic, overcorrected back to the left, causing the car to cross into oncoming traffic and sideswipe a Subaru Crosstrek, the release said.
The Civic then spun, and a southbound Toyota Sienna minivan hit the car on the driver's side. Keate died at the crash scene.
The people in the Sienna suffered injuries that were not life-threatening and were transported to a local hospital. Utah Highway Patrol officials initially said the person who died was in the Sienna, but later clarified that he was the driver of the Civic. UHP officials also initially reported that one person in the Subaru suffered serious injuries, but later clarified that the people in the Subaru were not injured.
It is not clear exactly how many people were involved in the crash, and how many people from the Sienna were injured.

U.S. Highway 189 was closed in both directions about a mile south of state Route 113, also known as Charleston Road, on the east side of Deer Creek Reservoir, according to UDOT, for several hours while authorities investigated the crash.
On Saturday, the running website MileSplit identified Keate as a varsity member of the Lone Peak High School cross-country team in 2020. MileSplit said Keate was "a high school junior and a promising runner who was preparing for his first outdoor track and field season."
The site also posted a video message Keate's father Scott left on Facebook. "I just wanted to express my gratitude and my love," Scott Keate said. "I love Jackson. His life is such a wonderful example. He came into the world with passion, and spent so many moments with just joy and passion."
