SALT LAKE CITY — It's election night (now day 2) in America, with the results of elections across the nation pouring in as updates continue.

The most attention of this year's elections will be focused on the presidential race between President Donald Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden, but there are also many questions involving Congress. Will the Republican Party maintain the majority in the Senate? Will the Democratic Party maintain the majority in the House of Representatives?

AP projection: Biden wins Michigan, nears needed 270 electoral votes

The Associated Press said Wednesday it projects Biden to win Michigan and its 16 electoral votes. The news organization now projects that Biden holds 264 electoral votes with five states left to be called.Of the remaining five states, Biden would need to win either Georgia, Nevada, North Carolina or Pennsylvania for the AP to project him as the winner of the 2020 election.This, of course, isn't final. States have weeks to certify voting results, which could include recounts in the coming weeks ahead of the Dec. 8 "safe harbor" deadline. Biden not calling victory but said he believes he will win; Trump's team sues Pennsylvania

Maintaining a lead in the projected electoral vote count, Biden said Wednesday afternoon that he's not calling a win yet but that he believes he will win the election."I'm confident that we will emerge victorious… there will be no blue states and red states when we win. Just the United States of America," he said.He spoke publicly spoke while Trump's team announced they are suing Pennsylvania to stop results counting there.Justin Clark, Trump's deputy campaign manager, said in a statement Wednesday that the campaign is "suing to stop Democrat election officials from hiding the ballot counting and processing from our Republican poll observers," the Associated Press reported.Clark said the campaign wants "to temporarily halt counting until there is meaningful transparency and Republicans can ensure all counting is done above board and by the law."Biden seemed to acknowledge this Wednesday."Every vote must be counted. AP: Biden wins Wisconsin

Joe Biden will win Wisconsin, the Associated Press projected Wednesday afternoon. The state carries 10 electoral votes and gives Biden 248 based on AP projections — 22 shy of the 270 needed to win the election.Races are still to be determined in Alaska, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada North Carolina and Pennsylvania.—Carter Williams, KSL.com

Collins reelected in Maine

Maine Sen. Susan Collins, a Republican, has won reelection, the Associated Press projects. The AP made the projection Wednesday afternoon local time with Collins 9 percentage points ahead of her Democratic challenger, Sara Gideon.Gideon conceded the election shortly after.The win gives the Republican Party 48 Senate seats with five elections still to be determined. A party needs 51 seats to hold the majority.Senate races are still to be determined in Alaska, Georgia, Michigan and North Carolina.At the moment, only one seat has switched parties, per AP projections. The day after: 7 states remain 'too close to call'; Wisconsin may be headed for a recount

Not much has happened since last night in terms of the Associated Press calling races. Trump won Maine's 2nd Congressional District, according to the AP. That gives him an additional electoral college vote.As of 11 a.m. Mountain time Wednesday, Biden still holds a narrow 238-214 lead in electoral votes with seven states still to be determined.There are some changes in terms of who is leading the remaining states. The AP currently reports Biden leads Michigan, Nevada and Wisconsin. Trump leads in Alaska, Georgia, North Carolina and Pennsylvania.Here are where all seven remaining states are as of 11 a.m., according to the AP:

Alaska: Trump leads with 63% of the vote at 45% of precincts reporting. The state carries 3 electoral votes.

Georgia: Trump leads with 50.3% of the vote at 95% of precincts reporting. The total difference is a little over 86,000 votes. The state carries 16 electoral votes.

Michigan: Biden leads with 49.7% of the vote at 96% of precincts reporting. The total difference is a little over 45,000 votes. The state carries 16 electoral votes.

Nevada: Biden leads with 49.2% of the vote at 67% of precincts reporting. The total difference is a little over 7,500 votes. The state carries 6 electoral votes.

North Carolina: Trump leads with 50.1% of the vote at 94% of precincts reporting. The total difference is a little over 75,000 votes. The state carries 15 electoral votes.

Pennsylvania: Trump leads with 53.5% of the vote at 64% of precincts reporting. The total difference is a tick over 464,000 votes. The state is the largest remaining prize for either candidate and carries 20 electoral votes.

Wisconsin: Biden leads with 49.6% of the vote at 95% of precincts reporting. The total difference is a little over 20,000 votes. The state carries 10 electoral votes.

Wisconsin Elections officials tweeted Wednesday morning that it was still awaiting results from two towns that account for about 600 votes in the state. It added that it doesn't have an elections results website and it won't report official voting numbers from its counties until next week.

Remember, the unofficial numbers being reported for Wisconsin come from the news media. The state doesn't have its own election night system for unofficial results. The WEC won't start getting official numbers from county clerks til next week.

It's very possible the state will end up with a recount. Bill Stepien, Trump's campaign manager, issued a statement to media members on Wednesday that questioned the results in Wisconsin and indicated the president's team would seek a recount."Despite ridiculous public polling used as a voter suppression tactic, Wisconsin has been a razor thin race as we always knew that it would be," the statement read. "There have been reports of irregularities in several Wisconsin counties which raise serious doubts about the validity of the results. With 9 states too close to call, Pres. Trump declares victory

Trump took to the stage of the White House's East Room at 12:20 a.m. Mountain time to discuss the election to this point."The results tonight have been phenomenal … we had just a big night," he said.Even though race results in eight states are too close to call, Trump falsely claimed victory and repeated his Twitter remarks about his opponents and the election. He added that he would go to the Supreme Court to stop counting of ballots."This is a fraud on the American public," Trump alleged, during his 10-minute speech.It's worth noting that ballots can be counted after election night as long as those ballots are submitted within the timeframe set by a state. Each state has its own rules for how ballots are counted, and it's not new to the 2020 election.As of midnight Mountain time, Biden held a 224-213 electoral vote lead, according to the Associated Press. But there were nine states with races to be called. In all, they total 101 electoral points.

Biden optimistic about current results; Trump tweets that opponents are 'trying to steal the election'

Biden remains in the lead among races called by the Associated Press; although Trump has narrowed the gap with key wins in Florida and Ohio.Nevertheless, Biden took the stage in Wilmington, Delaware, early Wednesday morning local time and said he was optimistic based on the current results. AP: Biden wins Hawaii and Minnesota; a look into holdups in other states

Add Hawaii and Minnesota and its combined 14 electoral votes to Biden, the Associated Press projects. The new organization called both races for Biden shortly after 10 p.m. Mountain.We're still waiting for the AP to call some key states, and there are indications this could be a long night. Here's a rundown of the situation in some of the states the AP hasn't called yet:

Florida: Still not called but AP now reports 98% results processed, with Trump leading by a little more than 380,000 votes.

Ohio: NBC News is calling the race for Trump. Per the AP, Trump held a 54% to 45% lead with 94% reporting.

Pennsylvania: There's 55% of ballots reported, and Trump leads 56% to 41%, according to the AP; however, a reporter for the Philadelphia Inquirer tweeted that there was a mixup between city and state election results that may have grossly underreported Biden votes in Philadelphia. That's a race that could take some time to sort out.

Texas: Trump leads 52% to 47% with 78% of results in. The difference being more than 500,000.

Wisconsin:The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that complete results from Milwaukee County aren't expected until the early hours Wednesday, and its fourth-largest county still hasn't had many votes reported.

The Associated Press didn't waste too much time with the final four states of the continental U.S. to close polls. The news organization called all four races as the polls closed there at 9 p.m. Mountain.Biden won California, Oregon and Washington, while Trump won Idaho, the AP projects. Postal service tells US judge it cannot complete sweep for delayed ballots by deadline

The U.S. Postal Service told a judge it could not complete his order to sweep mail processing facilities on Tuesday afternoon for delayed election ballots and immediately dispatch any for delivery in about a dozen states, including closely fought battlegrounds Pennsylvania and Florida.USPS data showed as of Sunday about 300,000 ballots that were received for mail processing did not have scans confirming their delivery to election authorities. Trump is projected to win the home state of Vice President Mike Pence. The Associated Press projects Indiana's 11 electoral votes will go to the president.Biden holds a slim 85-72 electoral lead at the moment based on the states already called by the Associated Press. AP: Trump wins Arkansas; Florida may be called soon

A few updates in the presidential race:

Arkansas polls closed at 6:30 p.m. Mountain time. The Associated Press called the race and its 6 electoral votes for Trump as the polls closed.

The Associated Press reports 88% of votes are now counted in Florida with Trump leading 51% to 48%. Some outlets have called it for Trump but AP says it's too close to call as of now.

Some delays are expected in Georgia. Per CNN, a pipe burst at State Farm Arena in Fulton County, Georgia. It's expected to delay the counting of absentee ballots there for three to four hours, which is significant because it's of the state's largest counties.

The Associated Press called the South Carolina race and its 9 electoral votes for Trump at 5:56 p.m. Mountain time. Mixed results early in Indiana, Kentucky

Many polling locations are still open but the poll closures in Indiana and Kentucky yield the first results of Tuesday evening.Per the Associated Press: With 3% reporting in Indiana, Trump leads with 68% of votes counted so far there, the Associated Press reports. With 8% counted, Biden leads Kentucky with 54% of votes so far.The president is favored to win both states.The first votes of the 2020 Election technically came at midnight Eastern time in two small New Hampshire towns, according to the Associated Press. Polls close in first two states

Polls are now closed in some parts of Indiana and Kentucky — the first two states to close the polls tonight. Poll locations in Central time in parts of both states will close at 5 p.m. The states represent 19 electoral votes in the presidential race.Of course, many eyes are also on the Kentucky Senate election between Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Democratic challenger Amy McGrath.The 78-year-old McConnell was first elected to the senate in 1984. President Donald Trump paid a visit to his campaign headquarters in Virigina Tuesday following a rally in Michigan Monday night, ARLnow.com reported.Meanwhile, Joe Biden traveled to his hometown of Scranton, Pennsylvania, USA Today reported. While in Scranton, Biden penned a message on the living room wall of his childhood home.It read: "From this house to the White House with the grace of God."Due to COVID-19, the 2020 election has been a little different in that millions of votes were cast prior to Tuesday. Utah elections officials said Monday that over 1 million ballots were already processed leading into the election, which was an all-time record.More than 101 million Americans voted either by mail or early voting leading up to Election Day, according to the New York Times.— Carter Williams, KSL.com
