Windstorm updates: Utah National Guard deploys to help with debris cleanup; 51K Utahns still without power

SALT LAKE CITY — Tens of thousands of people remained without power along the Wasatch Front on Thursday night following a fierce windstorm earlier this week.

More than 51,000 customers were without power as of 10:51 p.m., according to the Rocky Mountain Power website. The impacted areas run from Ogden to Salt Lake City.

The storm that hit Monday night into Tuesday knocked out power to 180,000 customers at one point.

Some schools remained closed Thursday in the Salt Lake City, Ogden, Granite, Davis and Weber school districts.

South Junior High School in the Weber district will be on a shortened schedule and Bonneville High School will hold virtual classes.

The Utah Transit Authority tweeted that the TRAX S-Line is running as a bus bridge both eastbound and westbound as crews finalize repairs to the line.

Rocky Mountain Power crews have been working continually to restore power to Utahns after a powerful windstorm caused severe damages and left more than 100,000 without power.By 7 p.m. Thursday, a majority of customers had services restored but another 52,377 Utahns were still without as part of 3,519 separate outages, RMP reported.Crews were still repairing extensive damages caused by the storm throughout Thursday, officials said.For the latest updates on power outages, visit RMP’s outage map here.

All of Salt Lake City School District delays start of school year until Monday

Salt Lake City School District will delay the start of its school year until Monday, Sept. 14, due to power outages caused by the windstorm earlier this week, school district interim superintendent Larry Madden said at a press conference alongside SLC Mayor Erin Mendenhall on Thursday afternoon.“The impacts of the storm have been more severe than we have anticipated...,” Madden said. “Based on the latest information from Rocky Mountain Power, we made the decision to delay the start.“We know that this will be disappointing news to many who are anxious to start the school year. We are too. Can’t wait to get back in classrooms. But to start tomorrow when so many people across the district are still without power is not the right decision. 8 Salt Lake City parks, 1 cemetery temporarily closed as crews continue to clean up after windstorm

Eight parks and one cemetery in Salt Lake City are closed temporarily as crews continue to clean up after the windstorm that hit the city earlier this week, the city mayor's office said Thursday afternoon.The eight parks and one cemetery are:

Liberty Park

Fairmont Park

Sunnyside Park

Jordan Park

Lindsey Gardens

Richmond Park

Riverside Park

Washington Square

Salt Lake City Cemetery

“The affected parks and public spaces incurred significant damage in the storm, creating dangerous conditions unsafe for the public,” a news release from Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall’s office reads.“It’s hard to see so many of our beloved open spaces upended like this,” Mendenhall said in the release. “I know these places, and the big, beautiful trees that inhabit them, hold significance for our residents. We want to get people back in these parks as soon as we can. We just ask that the public give us time to make sure they are safe first.”Crews continue to remove fallen trees, branches and debris from the parks and cemetery. Hurricane-level winds blew into the state Monday night into Tuesday, leading to at least one fatality, power outages, downed trees, and wind damage throughout northern Utah.The closures will remain in effect until the Salt Lake City Public Services Department “determines that the danger from the fallen trees has been mitigated and they are safe to reopen.”“Additionally, once dangerous circumstances have been cleared, the City will be coordinating volunteer efforts to help restore parks,” the news release says.— Xoel Cardenas, KSL.com

15 Salt Lake City schools still serving meals despite closures

Despite school being canceled due to aftermath of this week's windstorm, Salt Lake City School District students will still be able to receive midday meals at 15 schools.Student meals will be available from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the following schools:

Salt Lake City School District cancels school as windstorm fallout continues

Classes are canceled for all schools in the Salt Lake City district Thursday, district officials announced.While 38 of 40 schools in the district now have power restored to the buildings, there are still a large number of district families who do not have power or internet access at their homes, a statement on the district's website says."We know many of your students are anxious to get the school year started, as are we. However, it is the right call to cancel school today when so many are still without access," the statement says.District officials will be in contact with Rocky Mountain Power throughout the day Thursday, according to the statement. The district will be making a decision by 3 p.m. Thursday about whether to hold school on Friday.
