Multiple large events in Ogden to be replaced by smaller pop-ups

Multiple upcoming events in Ogden will be replaced with smaller pop-ups due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Ogden Downtown Alliance announced Wednesday.As part of that plan, the Historic 25th Street Car Show, Harvest Moon Celebration, Peculiar Pours Beer Festival and Witchstock have all been canceled for this year.“As the Ogden Downtown Alliance (ODA), our concern at this time is the health and wellbeing of our community members, vendors, staff and event attendees,” alliance officials wrote in a Facebook post. “We understand the importance of events such as these to the community and recognize the benefits they bring to Downtown Ogden.”However, residents looking to support local businesses will still get the opportunity as the organization will be hosting smaller “pop-up events” throughout the rest of year in place of the larger annual shows and festivals.— Lauren Bennett, KSL.com

Schools in need of reusable water bottles

A local nonprofit is in desperate need of reusable water bottles for students in the Granite School District.State COVID-19 regulations required schools to shut off drinking fountains to prevent the spread of the virus. Each class has access to a water filling station — but buying reusable bottles isn’t always feasible for families.“There’s a lot of need in this district, especially with the heat,” Brent Severe, CEO of the Granite Education Foundation. “There are 68,000 students in the district, and 65% are at or below poverty.”The Granite Education Foundation hopes to collect 10,000 bottles after getting these requests from teachers.—Ashley Moser, KSL TV

Utah sees 407 new cases, 4 deaths Wednesday

Utah’s number of COVID-19 cases has increased by 407 from Tuesday, with four more deaths reported, according to the Utah Department of Health.The rolling seven-day average number of positive cases per day is now at 376, according to the health department. The positive test rate per day for that time period is now 8.6%.Wednesday's totals give Utah 50,174 total confirmed cases, with 2,969 total hospitalizations and 401 total deaths from the disease.—Jacob Klopfenstein, KSL.com

New COVID-19 mandates on health care facilities announced

Threatening fines and funding cut-offs, the Trump administration on Tuesday issued new COVID-19 requirements for nursing homes and hospitals, prompting immediate pushback from beleaguered industries.To check the spread of the coronavirus in nursing homes, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services announced it will require facilities to test staff regularly or face fines.The move comes months after the White House first urged governors to test all nursing home residents and staff. With residents, nursing homes are being required to offer them coronavirus tests if there is an outbreak or if any show symptoms.—Associated Press

Personal finances of many Americans remain strong

It’s the paradox of a pandemic that has crushed the U.S. economy: 12.9 million lost jobs and a rash of businesses closing, yet the personal finances of many Americans have remained strong — and in some ways have even improved.A new poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research finds that 45% of Americans say they’re setting aside more money than usual. Twenty-six percent are paying down debt faster than they were before the coronavirus pandemic. In total, about half of Americans say they’ve either saved more or paid down debt since the outbreak began.—The Associated Press

Student tests positive for COVID-19 at Bridge Elementary in Roy

Lani Rounds, principal of Bridge Elementary in Roy, confirmed in a Wednesday morning statement that a student at the charter school in Roy had tested positive for COVID-19.The school partnered with the Utah Department of Health to determine which individuals had been in close contact with the student, and they have already been notified and quarantined.Bridge Elementary's reopening plan and list of protocols were also provided to those seeking additional guidance.—Katie Workman, KSL.com

Utah’s number of COVID-19 cases increased by 403 on Tuesday, with seven more deaths reported, but a lab reporting issue was still affecting the state's data, according to the Utah Department of Health.

A new report from Salt Lake County finds that nearly 90% of county residents are properly wearing face coverings in public about two months into the county’s mandate.

Provo Mayor Michelle Kaufusi says she intends to veto a mask mandate unanimously passed by the Provo City Council Tuesday night.
