SALT LAKE CITY — Sunday's update from the Utah Department of Health revealed 170 new cases of COVID-19 and two deaths from the disease since Saturday.

That brings Utah to 7,238 total confirmed cases, up from 7,068 the day before for a rate increase of 2.4%, and 80 total coronavirus-related deaths.

The total number of cases reported by the health department includes all cases of COVID-19 since Utah’s outbreak began, including those who are infected now, those who have recovered from the disease, and those who have died.

Utah Department of Health spokesman Tom Hudachko said in an email that both deceased Utahns were Salt Lake County residents. One was a man between 60 and 85 years old who was hospitalized at the time of his death; the other was a woman over 85 who had lived in a long-term care facility.

The health department is also reporting eight new coronavirus hospitalizations and 3,978 new tests conducted Sunday. The rate of positive tests in Utah sits steady at 4.2%.

Hudachko said 103 positive cases are currently hospitalized in Utah. About 4,075 Utahns are estimated to have recovered from COVID-19.

Health department data shows 73.5% of Utahns hospitalized for COVID-19 report some preexisting condition; diabetes, cardiovascular problems and being a former smoker are among the most common.

Among investigated coronavirus cases, 8.5% have required hospitalization in Utah thus far. Only 1.9% have required intensive care, and 84 patients — 1.3% of investigated cases — have been placed on a ventilator, in total.

The average age of Utahns who've died of COVID-19 is 73.2 years old. Seventy percent were over age 65.

An "epidemic curve" created by the health department attempts to track the change in cases over time, "based on whether the three-day daily average of cases is increasing, staying stable, or decreasing."

It shows that, after a three-day incidence decline and a plateau, growth has been increasing again since May 13.
