SALT LAKE CITY — Tiffany Sandberg has resigned from the Salt Lake City Board of Education effective immediately.

Sandberg, who represented Precinct 1 in the northwest quadrant of the city for 7 1⁄2 years, stepped down for “personal reasons,” she said.

Sandberg had previously announced she would not seek reelection but said she intended to serve out her term, which ends in December.

She said working in health care during the COVID-19 pandemic and meeting her school board responsibilities had become “overwhelming.”

“If COVID-19 hadn’t hit, this wouldn’t be happening,” she said.

In February, Sandberg stepped down as board president amid infighting on the board over personnel and other issues.

Her resignation from board leadership came after both Superintendent Lexi Cunningham and business administrator Janet Roberts stepped down from the school district. Cunningham was recently selected as the new executive director of the Utah School Superintendents Association.

West High School principal Ford White was relieved of his duties after he drove home students who had been drinking on campus instead of asking school resource officers to address the matter.

“I feel that the majority of the board wants to take the district in a different direction than I am able to lead them in,” Sandberg said in a statement at the time.

The Salt Lake City Board of Education is accepting applications to fill the Precinct 1 position.

Applicants must have lived within the precinct boundaries for at least a year. Applications are due at 3 p.m. Friday, May 1. The application is available online.

The school board will interview candidates on Tuesday, May 5, starting at 5 p.m. The new board member will be sworn in no later than May 14.

The appointed board member will serve the remainder of Sandberg’s unexpired term. The Precinct 1 board seat is up for election in November 2020.
