Domo lays off 10% of workforce due to economic impact caused by COVID-19

Domo CEO Josh James spent some of his Thursday calling CEO after CEO looking to see if they were hiring. It wasn’t for himself; it was for the people he had just laid off. The American Fork-based cloud software company was forced to cut roughly 10% of its workforce due to the economic impact caused by the novel coronavirus outbreak. Gov. Herbert extends stay-home directive to May 1

Utah Gov. Gary Herbert extended the state’s stay-home directive through May 1 on Friday after announcing the directive would be extended through April on Thursday. “We are seeing encouraging evidence that our efforts to stay home are making a difference,” Herbert said in a statement. “We cannot let up on these measures. Working together, we can slow the spread of coronavirus, alleviate the stress on our health systems, and get Utahns back to work and to a level of normalcy more quickly. Extending these measures now, will save many lives.” The extension comes as part of the state's "Utah Leads Together Plan" in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. — Lauren Bennett, KSL.com

Salt Lake City mayor defers 2020 business license fees for landlords who don’t evict tenants

In the seventh proclamation issued by Salt Lake City, Mayor Erin Mendenhall deferred 2020 business license fees for landlords who don’t evict tenants because of financial hardship between Friday and three months after the city’s emergency proclamation ends. Rent will also be forgiven for any not-for-profit tenants leasing property owned by Salt Lake City Corporation or the Redevelopment Agency of Salt Lake City in May and June. The new proclamation also allows parking of recreational vehicles on city streets "to provide a place to sleep for medical personnel, first responders, or other employees that may come into contact with COVID-19 as a result of their employment during the tenure of the emergency declaration,” it states. “I hope that with additional actions in these areas we are able to help address some pressure points felt by our population as we all continue our efforts to flatten the curve,” Mendenhall said in a statement. — Lauren Bennett, KSL.com

University of Utah to hold virtual commencement on April 30 The University of Utah will be holding two graduation ceremonies for the class of 2020 — a virtual one on April 30 and a traditional ceremony on Dec. 18-19. “We are grateful to all the graduate candidates who took the time to fill out this important survey,” Lori McDonald, vice president for student affairs, said in a statement. “While none of the options are what any of us had envisioned, we hope these two graduation celebrations will provide our community members with the moments of recognition they deserve, and we thank everyone for their patience and flexibility as we navigate this public health crisis together.” — Lauren Bennett, KSL.com

Men’s Resource Center in Salt Lake County quarantined after 2 confirmed COVID-19 cases

The Salt Lake County Health Department has quarantined the entire Men’s Resource Center, meaning everyone inside will remain there for monitoring and testing. So far, two individuals who stay at the center have tested positive for COVID-19. The first individual is being treated at an area hospital, officials said. No new clients will be allowed into the facility either, Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson said in a prepared statement on Friday. The worldwide death toll from the coronavirus hit 100,000 as Christians around the globe marked a Good Friday unlike any other — in front of computer screens instead of in church pews — and some countries tiptoed toward reopening segments of their battered economies. Around the world, public health officials and religious leaders alike warned people against violating the lockdowns and social distancing rules over Easter and allowing the virus to come storming back. Authorities resorted to roadblocks and other means to discourage travel. — Associated Press

Utah sees 126 new cases of COVID-19, 4 new deaths

Utah’s number of COVID-19 cases increased by 126 from Thursday, with four new reported deaths, according to the Utah Department of Health. Friday's totals give Utah 2,102 confirmed cases, with 183 hospitalizations and 17 total deaths from the disease. Previously, there were 1,976 cases in the state. The new numbers indicate a 6.4% increase in positive cases since Thursday. Of the 40,762 people tested in Utah so far, 5.2% have tested positive for COVID-19. — Jacob Klopfenstein, KSL.com

US Coronavirus Taskforce update: US death projection down, antibody tests coming soon

President Donald Trump and the coronavirus taskforce issued an update to the national response on Friday at noon.Trump stated that the United States has been in conversation with OPEC nations to cut oil production and reduce stockpiles. He also said that the US will be expediting aid to US farmers.The expected death toll of the virus across the country has been reduced “well below” 100,000, its previous best-case scenario, Trump said, due to most citizens obeying social distancing.He also claimed that the federal government currently has enough personal protective equipment and is commissioning more. As part of efforts to solve N-95 mask shortages, the federal government purchased 60 sanitation machines which can clean tens of thousands of N-95 masks in a day. Masks can be sanitized for re-use up to 20 times, Trump said.Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, also spoke at the conference, saying that cases are beginning to level off and come down.Fauci said he recently spoke with leaders and governors of midwestern states, including Utah, and hopes these states will not see case spikes like New York and New Jersey have.He also encouraged viewers to go to clinicaltrials.gov for updates on drugs and treatments surrounding the virus. The trials should have some results during the summer. These trials are in addition to coronavirus antibody tests, which Fauci expects will be available within ‘a week or so.’ These tests will be able to detect if someone has ever had the virus.

Utah Valley University reschedules commencement for August

Utah Valley University's Class of 2020 will be honored at commencement ceremonies on August 19-20, the university announced Friday. The ceremony has been rescheduled due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Commencement will begin at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 19 in the UCCU Center on the Orem Campus, according to a news release. Utah Jazz owner Gail Miller will deliver the keynote address. “Graduation marks the completion of a remarkable educational journey and the celebration of a true achievement,” UVU President Astrid S. Tuminez said in a news release. “It is a unique opportunity to celebrate years of hard work, persistence, and sacrifice by our students and all who supported them throughout their UVU years. We promise our Class of 2020 and their families and friends a memorable celebration in August.” Students who previously registered for the commencement ceremony that was originally scheduled for this spring will need to register again for the August ceremony. Utah Division of Motor Vehicles urges customers to do business remotely

The Utah Division of Motor Vehicles is urging customers to do business by mail, email or phone for tasks such as duplicating registrations, replacing decals or plates and renewing registration for vehicles expired for over six months. Lobbies at all DMV branches remain closed, according to a news release from the division. Most services can be completed online at rex.utah.gov or through an on-the-spot registration renewal station. Information about on-the-spot stations is available at spot.utah.gov. DMV branches in Salt Lake City, South Valley, Farmington and Ogden remain open for drive-through services. Those branches are open 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays. Additionally, the DMV branch in Hurricane also is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. People are advised to consider whether they need to go to an in-person branch instead of completing tasks remotely or online. Many Utahns express worry, frustration over losing their jobs

Many Utahns already feeling the sting of unemployment said they are now dealing with the fact that they’ll be out of work even longer, expressing worry and frustration over losing their jobs. Most people said they understand why Salt Lake County extended the “Stay-At-Home” order, and even support it. “It’s about now that I’m feeling like, ‘oh you know what, time to tighten the belt,'” said Annie Palmer, a single mom who lost both of her jobs a couple weeks ago. — Tania Dean, KSL TV

American Family Insurance returning $4 million to Utah auto customers amid coronavirus crisis

Thousands of Utahns will receive a check from their insurance company due to parking their vehicles during the COVID-19 outbreak. American Family Insurance this week announced the company will return approximately $4 million in “premium relief” to customers in the Beehive State following recent approval by the state’s Insurance Division, a news release stated. The rebates are part of the national insurer’s plan to refund $200 million to customers who are driving notably less during the COVID-19 pandemic, explained American Family Insurance spokeswoman Clare Hendricks. — Jasen Lee, KSL

Order requiring info from travelers coming into Utah goes into effect

Beginning Friday travelers coming into Utah by plane or car will be required to complete a travel declaration form that asks questions about testing, symptoms and previous travel. That’s according to Gov. Gary Herbert’s latest executive order. Passengers arriving at the Salt Lake International Airport will receive a card from the Utah Department of Transportation upon arrival, directing each person 18 and older to complete a survey within three hours of arrival. — Matt Rascon, KSL TV

807th Medical Command deploying to fight coronavirus pandemic

A major mobilization involving hundreds of US Army Reserve medics and nurses is underway to send troops to some of the regions of the country most affected by the novel coronavirus. Those efforts are headquartered at Fort Douglas in Utah. Officials with the Army Reserve said this is an operation never before seen. They are taking reserves trained to help injured troops in war zones, and sending them to fight on the front lines of the pandemic. — Garna Mejia, KSL TV

More information about Gov. Herbert's travel declaration enactment

People driving into Utah won't be stopped at the border. Instead, they'll get a text message on their phones asking them to fill out a travel declaration online, in accordance with Utah Gov. Gary Herbert's travel declaration order. The Utah COVID-19 Community Task Force provided more details about how the process will work in a Twitter thread Friday morning.

Does ‘border bias’ lull policymakers, people into thinking they’re safe?

Some policymakers are falling prey to what a pair of University of Utah professors call “border bias” as they make rules for slowing the spread of coronavirus in their states. In response to COVID-19, many initiatives under consideration or in place seem to assume that state or county borders are somehow going to protect people from the deadly disease, according to U. marketing professors Arul and Himanshu Mishra. People also can erroneously believe that if the virus is not spreading in their city or state, then they are safe. The Utah Health Department reported 130 new COVID-19 cases in the state on Thursday afternoon, bringing the state's total to 1,976 cases since the coronavirus outbreak began. That cumulative number includes Utahns who have recovered, died or been hospitalized with the disease.

With a startling 6.6 million people seeking jobless benefits last week, the United States has reached a grim landmark: Roughly one in 10 workers have lost their jobs in just the past three weeks.

Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson announced she will extend the county’s "Stay Safe, Stay Home" order through May 1.

Gov. Gary Herbert extended Utah's "Stay Home, Stay Safe" directive through the end of April to slow the spread of COVID-19.

The last of Utah’s Mighty Five National Parks announced it is closing due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with no visitors allowed to camp or recreate at Capitol Reef.
