Southeast Utah Health Department reports first COVID-19 case

Late Friday evening, the Southeast Utah Health Department announced it had confirmed its first COVID-19 case, a woman between the age of 25-45.   Preliminary evidence suggests the woman, who is a Grand County resident, contracted the disease from contact with individuals outside of Utah. This case is not included in the state’s total number for Friday but will be added in the coming days.

Utah governor issues 'Stay Safe, Stay Home' directive to slow the spread of COVID-19

Gov. Gary Herbert issued a "Stay safe, Stay Home" directive on Friday to slow the spread of COVID-19 throughout Utah. The directive is effective immediately until April 13. While it is not a shelter-in-place order, the governor instructed all individuals in the state to stay home as much as possible and practice social distancing when in public. Salt Lake County Councilman Arlyn Bradshaw tests positive for COVID-19

Salt Lake County Councilman Arlyn Bradshaw has tested positive for COVID-19, he said in a Facebook post Friday. "I am grateful for the doctors and medical professionals working on the front lines of this crisis every day and who have provided me with quality medical care, in particular, the staff at University of Utah Health which professionally administered my drive up test and have provided me direction following my diagnosis," he said in the post. "I encourage everyone in our community to support them as best we can by trying to slow the spread of this virus by staying home, social distancing, washing our hands, and following the advice and direction of public health officials and medical professionals."

Trump signs $2.2T stimulus after swift congressional votes

President Donald Trump signed an unprecedented $2.2 trillion economic rescue package into law Friday, after swift and near-unanimous action by Congress this week to support businesses, rush resources to overburdened health care providers and help struggling families during the deepening coronavirus epidemic. Acting with unity and resolve unseen since the 9/11 attacks, Washington moved urgently to stem an economic free-fall caused by widespread restrictions meant to slow the spread of the virus that have shuttered schools, closed businesses and brought American life in many places to a virtual standstill.

Could COVID-19 force Utah hospitals to prioritize care?

In countries like Italy and Iran, the COVID-19 pandemic has already forced health care professionals to make difficult decisions about how best to allocate resources. Could the novel coronavirus put Utah doctors in the same position? If so, the state has already issued guidelines for how to choose. And for Utahns over 90 years old or suffering with dementia, neuromuscular disease, metastatic cancer, organ failure, or traumatic brain injury, the guidelines are not good news.

Apple releases coronavirus screening app and website in partnership with CDC

Apple on Friday released a website and an iOS app that allows users to screen themselves for coronavirus symptoms, marking another response to the pandemic by a major tech platform. Both tools were developed in partnership with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as well as the White House's Coronavirus Task Force and the Federal Emergency Management Agency, Apple said in a statement to CNN Business. The app and website include a questionnaire and information about the novel coronavirus.

US eyes new outbreaks as infections worldwide top 575,000

New Orleans rushed to build a makeshift hospital in its convention center Friday as troubling new outbreaks bubbled in the United States, deaths surged in Italy and Spain and the world warily trudged through the pandemic that has sickened more than a half-million people. Punctuating the fact that no one is immune to the new coronavirus, it pierced even the highest echelons of global power, with British Prime Minister Boris Johnson becoming the first leader of a major country to test positive.

You have a little extra time to get that gold star on your license because of COVID-19

If you don’t yet have a license or ID card with a gold star in the corner, you have an extra year to make sure you get it. “Due to circumstances resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic and the national emergency declaration, the Department of Homeland Security, as directed by President Donald J. Trump, is extending the REAL ID enforcement deadline beyond the current Oct. 1, 2020, deadline,” acting Secretary of Homeland Security Chad Wolf said in a prepared statement Thursday. The new deadline for obtaining a REAL ID with a gold star in the corner is Oct. 1, 2021 — a year after the original due date.

Rep. John Curtis joins overwhelming vote in favor of coronavirus relief bill as $2.2 trillion recovery package heads to president’s desk

Rep. John Curtis voted for the massive coronavirus relief bill Friday, saying he wanted to do his part to start the healing process and reassure family, friends and neighbors that help is on the way. But in so doing the Utah Republican called on Congress to address the ballooning national deficit. The $2.2 trillion recovery package is the largest in the country’s history, accounting for almost half of the annual federal budget and about 10% of U.S. economic output.

Airlines are doing away with middle seats and beverage service

Fliers in the United States have gotten used to bringing their own food, but now they'll have to bring their own beverages, too. Major US airlines are implementing substantial changes to the few free things passengers still receive on airplanes, including drinks and snacks, because of the coronavirus pandemic. Delta Air Lines, Southwest and American Airlines have all announced this week that they're temporarily suspending beverage service and cutting meal service as a way to cut costs and reduce the number of items flight attendants touch.

Postponing Olympics the right call, but Utah Royals still heartbroken by decision

Craig Harrington may be entering his first season as head coach of Utah Royals FC, but he has plenty of experience. Most of it — whether in tenure with the Chicago Red Stars in the National Women’s Soccer League, the LA Galaxy academy setup, or the Turks and Caicos men’s national team — has seen him develop internationally renowned athletes across the country. Each one of those athletes had a goal — an ultimate prize, a light to push them through long, hard, grueling days of training. That light was the Olympic Games. Now, for a few of those athletes, that light is gone — or, at least, postponed.

2nd Utah death reported from COVID-19

Utah’s number of COVID-19 cases has increased to 466 in Utah residents and 14 in visitors, and the state's second death from the disease has been reported, according to the Utah Department of Health.

San Juan County in southeast Utah reports first COVID-19 case

San Juan County in southeast Utah reported its first case of COVID-19 Friday. The person diagnosed there is a man under the age of 65 who is a resident of San Juan County, according to a news release from the San Juan Public Health Department.

Donovan Mitchell and Rudy Gobert cleared of COVID-19

On Friday, the Utah Jazz announced that all players and staff — including Rudy Gobert and Donovan Mitchell — have been cleared of COVID-19. It’s been over two weeks since Gobert tested positive for the disease caused by the novel coronavirus just before a game against Oklahoma City; his positive test caused the NBA to shut down. Following his test, all 58 members of the team’s traveling party were immediately tested, with Mitchell coming back positive with the virus.

TriCounty Health Department in eastern Utah announces first COVID-19 case

The TriCounty Health Department, which includes Duchesne, Uintah and Daggett counties in eastern Utah, has reported its first COVID-19 case. The person diagnosed is between the ages of 18 and 60, according to a Friday news release from the health department. They are currently recovering at home and have not been hospitalized. “While this is our first case, we do not anticipate it being our last. We are asking people not to panic but to remain vigilant regarding their personal hygiene, physical distancing, and staying home at the first sign of symptoms,” TriCounty health medical adviser Dr. Karl Breitenbach said in the release. “Minimizing travel, even within our community, will lower the risk to yourself and others.” Health officials are currently contact-tracing for people and locations who were potentially exposed to the disease through the person who was infected, the news release said.

But under conditions imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the letters from middle and high schoolers to residents of Life Care Center of Salt Lake City have helped to lift their spirits at a time when their families are restricted from visiting them. Gov. Herbert changes signature gathering process for candidates during pandemic

Gov. Gary Herbert said Thursday candidates will now be able to gather signatures for a place on the June primary election ballot by having voters print off an online form and return it, eliminating the need for campaigns to collect the needed names in person during the coronavirus pandemic. “This is a matter of fairness and preserving the integrity of our election process in these unusual times,” the governor said in a statement about his decision to suspend portions of the state law on signature gathering through an executive order. UK's Johnson tests positive for virus, deaths soar in Spain

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson tested positive for the coronavirus, his office said Friday, while the number of infections in the United States surged to the most in the world and Spain announced a record number of virus deaths overnight. Johnson's office said the prime minister was tested after showing mild symptoms for the new coronavirus and is self-isolating and continuing to lead Britain's response to the pandemic. “Be in no doubt that I can continue, thanks to the wizardry of modern technology, to communicate with all my top team, to lead the national fightback against coronavirus," Johnson said in a video message, adding that he had a temperature and persistent cough.

Utah’s number of COVID-19 cases increased to 388 residents and 14 nonresident visitors, Utah Department of Health confirmed Thursday.

Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall says she wants a stay-at-home order, but she would prefer to work with the state as a whole to enact one.

The number of cases in the United States climbed above China, where the virus originated late last year, to become the world’s highest.

The Senate late Wednesday passed an unparalleled $2.2 trillion economic rescue package that will aid businesses, workers and health care systems engulfed by the coronavirus pandemic. The U.S. House will take up the bill today.
