SALT LAKE CITY — Here are the latest coronavirus-related updates from Utah and around the world.

A total of 181 Utahns have tested positive for COVID-19, the Utah Department of Health said Sunday.

The state also suffered its first death from the disease.

Bountiful Temple closes, church reminds missionaries importance of self-isolating

For the first time in Utah, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has closed one of its temples amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The Bountiful Temple was added to the list by the church over the weekend, marking 88 closures worldwide, according to the Church Newsroom. In total, 13 temples were added to the list this weekend. “The Church is monitoring developments and taking steps to comply with best practices and direction provided by public health organizations of various national governments,” read the initial statement regarding the effects of the virus on church membership worldwide. The church also issued a reminder Sunday to all parents of returning missionaries regarding the need to self-quarantine in the coming weeks. That includes a large mass of missionaries that returned to Salt Lake International Airport on Sunday to a large gathering of parents, siblings and other family members awaiting them in the adjacent parking garage. Utah Sen. Luz Escamilla tests positive for Coronavirus

Sen. Luz. Escamilla announced Sunday evening that she has joined the list of Utah officials who have tested positive for COVID-19. Escamilla said in a statement that she started experiencing symptoms on Friday evening and after being tested was informed that she is positive for the virus. "As someone who has asthma, this is a scary diagnosis, but I am confident that I will make a full recovery," read the statement. While Escamilla says she is feeling "pretty sick" right now, she is still working to ensure that "Utah's most vulnerable communities are not overlooked during this crisis." She is focused on those who are facing difficulty paying rent, identifying the needs of those who have been deemed essential workers and working with tribal communities, communities with limited English proficiency and those experiencing homelessness have support and resources available.

Congressman Ben McAdams gives update after hospitalization

Congressman McAdams issued a statement on his health status after being hospitalized with additional COVID-19 symptoms. McAdams said he experienced "severe shortness of breath" Friday evening. "I followed public health guidelines and called the COVID-19 hotline," read the statement. "I was instructed to go to the hospital and check in with the isolation unit and to be seen by health care providers equipped to receive me." McAdams continues to say that he received oxygen and struggled to maintain his blood oxygen levels. He is now feeling better and is expected to be released soon. "My experience has shown me how critical it is to follow the advice of the CDC and the Utah Department of Health in order to stop the spread of this virus."

Sen. Mike Lee and Sen. Mitt Romney will self-quarantine for 14 days after Rand Paul test

Following the news that Sen. Rand Paul, R-Kentucky, has tested positive for COVID-19, Utah Sen. Mike Lee announced that he will self-quarantine for 14 days because of the "timing, proximity, and duration" of his exposure to Paul. Sen. Mitt Romney was ordered by his physician to immediately self-quarantine and not to vote on the Senate floor, according to Liz Johnson, Communications Director. Johnson said Romney has no symptoms but will be tested. Romney recently sat next to Paul for extended periods. One member of Utah's congressional delegation, Rep. Ben McAdams, has already tested positive for COVID-19.

Updated numbers show 181 positive cases in Utah

In its daily update on the number of COVID-19 cases in Utah, the Department of Health said that 181 people have been diagnosed. The state also suffered its first death from the novel coronavirus. The new Utah numbers include 169 Utahns and 12 visitors. Salt Lake County had 84 cases, Summit County has 50 and Davis County has reported 19. UDOH's numbers represent a 45-case increase over its Saturday update.

Rand Paul tests positive for COVID-19

Sen. Rand Paul, R-Kentucky, has tested positive for the novel coronavirus, he announced Sunday. Paul said he is "feeling fine" and is in quarantine. Paul is now one of several congressmen to contract COVID-19, including Utah's own Rep. Ben McAdams. Separately, German Chancellor Angela Merkel will self-quarantine after a doctor who gave her a vaccine tested positive, the Associated Press reports.

Local teams, players react to season's cancellation

While far from the most important impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the virus has left athletes and fans around the country mourning the loss of competition and camaraderie. "I think we all have a social responsibility to try to get this pandemic under control," BYU head coach Mike Littlewood said. "Baseball is my life, it’s my coaching staff’s life; it’s more than a job. It was a total shock." "At the end of the day, rugby is just a game — even if it is a way of life for some of our boys," said Warriors fly half Robbie Povey. "But the same with all sports, it’s a game and people’s health have to come first."

The Utah Department of Health released an updated tally of diagnosed COVID-19 cases in the state Saturday, showing an increase of 25 cases. A total of 126 Utahns and 11 visitors have tested positive, the department said

Several Utah distilleries are making alcohol-based hand sanitizers and distributing them to hospitals.

Weber State University announced Saturday that one of its student-athletes has tested positive for COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus.

Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall issued a fourth emergency declaration Saturday, designed to limit city employees' interactions and allow them to take city vehicles home during the COVID-19 pandemic.
