TAYLORSVILLE — One man is dead Saturday after an officer-involved shooting that occurred in a backyard in Taylorsville.

The man has been identified as Bryan Pena, 28, of Salt Lake City.

The incident began when officers responded to a report of shots fired northeast of 6200 South and 3200 West about 3:20 a.m., according to Unified Police Sgt. Melody Gray. A vehicle was seen leaving the area heading west on 6200 South.

Officers soon identified a suspicious vehicle and initiated a traffic stop, but the vehicle fled, Gray said. Officers did not pursue it, but saw it turn south onto 3200 West.

Police found the vehicle stopped after hitting a street sign about 6250 S. 3200 West, Gray said. "The driver ... got out of the vehicle and began running down the sidewalk, and then jumped a fence," she said.

Officers pursued Pena over the fence into a backyard at 6303 S. Stokewater Dr. where "shots were fired," Gray said.

The home where the shooting took place is vacant, Gray said. The shooting is under investigation.
