MURRAY — A 3-year-old boy is in stable condition with no life-threatening injuries after he apparently shot himself accidentally in Murray, police say.
The shooting took place about 6:30 a.m. Thursday near 5234 S. 820 East in Murray, according to Murray police officer Kenny Bass.
A family member took the boy to the hospital, Bass said.
It appears that the boy woke up before everyone else in the house and was able to climb up on a kitchen counter, Bass said. From there, the boy was able to get a handgun that was placed very high up in the kitchen, Bass added.
The boy got the handgun down and was playing with it when he accidentally shot himself in the head, according to Bass.

The shooting remains under investigation. Nobody involved in the shooting was identified.
The gun involved was owned by someone in the home, but it is not clear who owns it, Bass said.
Emergency dispatchers initially said the child was 4 years old, but Bass clarified that the boy was 3.
