SOUTH SALT LAKE — One man is in critical condition after he was hit by a pickup truck in South Salt Lake late Wednesday night.

Emergency officials responded to 3400 South and 300 West about 10:26 p.m. after a vehicle traveling north on 300 West struck a 43-year-old man in a wheelchair in the roadway, according to South Salt Lake Police Lt. Gregg Carlson.

The driver, an adult male traveling with three children, pulled over immediately and called police, Carlson said.

Carlson said the wheelchair was in the roadway, not a crosswalk, and the driver claims he didn’t have time to stop. South Salt Lake police, fire, and a crash analysis reconstruction team all responded to the scene.

The collision is under investigation. South Salt Lake executive officer Gary Keller said the driver is being fully cooperative and impairment is not suspected.
