GRANTSVILLE — An early morning shooting in Grantsville left one man injured and another under arrest, but not in connection with the shooting, according to police.

About 4 a.m. Wednesday, police were called to a report of shots fired at a mobile home park, 520 W. Clark St., said Grantsville police officer Cody Painter. Officers arrived to find a man lying in the road with a gunshot wound.

The alleged shooter was found hiding behind a shed in a nearby backyard, Painter said.

But as detectives began unraveling what had happened, they learned that the two men, both in their 20s, both lived in the house and had gotten into an argument. The man who was shot had attempted to assault the other man with a “club,” and was shot by his roommate in self-defense, Painter said.

The man who was shot was taken to University of Utah Hospital in Salt Lake in critical condition, but at last word was stable, the officer said.

The shooting was determined to be in self-defense, Painter said, but the gun used in the shooting was reported stolen the day before. The man who allegedly fired the shot was expected to be booked into jail for investigation of charges related to the stolen firearm.

Investigators said they believe drugs were a factor in the confrontation, and expect to arrest the man who was shot for investigation of drug-related charged once he is released from the hospital.

Two children were asleep in the home at the time, Painter said. Two women who were also in the home had just left to take a walk down the street prior to the shooting, he said.
