THE GALAXY — For those of you who can’t get enough new “Star Wars” content, Ewan McGregor has a message: “Hello there!”
The Scottish actor might reprise his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi in a series on Disney’s upcoming streaming service, Disney+, according to Variety.
McGregor played the legendary Jedi in his younger years in the “Star Wars” prequels, but it’s been 14 years since he last appeared as Obi-Wan in 2005’s “Revenge of the Sith.”
No other details on the new series were available, Variety reported.
Rumors stirred for years that McGregor would reprise the role in a standalone film similar to last year’s “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” according to Variety. But after that film’s disappointing box office returns, Disney officials apparently are mulling a series treatment for Obi-Wan instead.
There are at least two other live-action “Star Wars” spinoff shows in the works for Disney+.
One is “The Mandalorian,” thought to be based on the franchise’s enigmatic bounty hunter Boba Fett. Another series reportedly will focus on Cassian Andor, Diego Luna’s character in “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” Variety reports. Luna is expected to reprise his role in that series.
The “Star Wars” shows are part of the ever-growing lineup of remakes, reboots and original content slated for Disney+, which will launch in the U.S. on Nov. 12.
The company is betting big on the service, which is sure to throw a wrench in things for the other major players in the streaming world. In addition to the extremely popular titles the company has created, Disney also now owns the ultra-lucrative Marvel Studios.
Disney is likely hoping viewer nostalgia, as well as an affordable price, will drive consumers to the streaming service.
It remains to be seen how the Netflixes, Hulus and HBOs of the world will be able to compete with Disney’s attractive streaming service. Hopefully, Disney+ will bring balance to the streaming world, not leave it in darkness.
