SALT LAKE CITY — The University of Utah men’s lacrosse team played their first NCAA Division I game against Vermont Friday afternoon.
The Catamounts scored only 19 seconds into the game and never looked back, winning by a score of 21-6.
The Utes got on the board for the first time as a Division I team nearly four and a half minutes into the game at the hands of junior attacker Jimmy Perkins, a new member of the team and grad transfer from Robert Morris University.
After two more first period goals from Vermont to make the score 4-1, Utah found the back of the net for a second time with a shot from sophomore attacker Josh Stout, a local kid from Alpine who led the Utah club team in scoring last season, to make the score 4-2. Stout would go on to score two more goals in the second quarter on his way to a first-half hat-trick.
After the game, Stout commented on how the game was just one step on the path toward building the lacrosse program at Utah.
“We’ve put in a lot of time and we’re just showing everybody what we’ve been working on,” he said. “We’re trying to be the toughest team in college lacrosse and we’re building towards that.
“I think today we were celebrating everything we’ve accomplished so far and everything we’re going to accomplish,” he added. “This is the greatest thing ever, playing Division I college lacrosse in Utah.”
In the second half, junior midfielder Aaron Fjeldsted, another Alpine native, scored a goal for the Utes near the end of the third quarter to make the score 14-5.
Sophomore Jake Stout, brother of Josh, scored the sixth goal midway through the fourth quarter for the Utes.
Sophomore Liam Donnelly played most of the game at goalie for Utah, recording nine saves for the Utes.
While the first game was played at Rice-Eccles Stadium, the rest of Utah’s home games will take place down the road at Judge Memorial High School.
The Utes will take on Mercer next Saturday, Feb. 9, at 12 p.m. MST.
