SALT LAKE CITY — A former Clearfield elementary school substitute teacher who was charged in 2017 with touching six students inappropriately was sentenced to prison Friday after he pleaded guilty to two felony charges.

Mark Glenton Bedel, 63, of Kaysville, was sentenced to serve at least six years in the Utah State Prison after he pleaded guilty to two counts of attempted aggravated sexual abuse of a child, both first-degree felonies, according to court documents. Each count carried three years to life in prison, but 2nd District Court Judge John Morris ordered the sentences to be served consecutively.

As a part of the deal, six other first-degree felony counts were dropped.

Bedel had previously worked as a substitute teacher at Wasatch Elementary School in Clearfield and was charged on Oct. 30, 2017. Prosecutors alleged Bedel had inappropriately touched six students, some on more than one occasion. The six male victims ranged in age from 7 to 9 years old at the time of the offense, prosecutors said.

Bedel began working as a substitute teacher with the Davis School District in March 2016 and was no longer employed by the time charges were filed in 2017.

He had previously taken a plea in abeyance to DUI and negligent collision in 2006, according to court records. The charges were later dismissed after a probation period.
