SALT LAKE CITY — BYU's campus police department is not exempt from Utah’s open-records laws, a 3rd District Court judge ruled Friday.
“The court concludes that when BYUPD is acting as a law enforcement agency and/or its officers are acting as law enforcement officers, it is a government entity subject to GRAMA,” Judge Laura S. Scott wrote, according to court documents.
Scott’s decision comes from a lawsuit filed by The Salt Lake Tribune and former Tribune reporter Matthew Piper on July 12, 2016.
