KEARNS — A man believed to be connected with a shooting at a smoke shop in Millcreek that left a man injured last week was arrested during a traffic stop Thursday night, police said.
Unified police said Elhelbawy Adam Idrees, 19, was arrested on suspicion of attempted aggravated murder and discharge of a firearm in connection with a shooting at Pharoah's Smoke Shop, 3925 S. State, on Feb. 8.
Police said an officer in Kearns pulled over a vehicle for speeding and quickly identified the driver of the vehicle as Idrees, whom police suspected was involved in the Millcreek shooting. Idrees was taken into custody without incident, interviewed and then booked into Salt Lake County Jail.
Police said they believe an argument ensued between two groups of people near the smoke shop at about 8 p.m. on Feb. 8 when they allege Idrees fired the shots.
Witnesses told responding officers they saw a man limping with an apparent gunshot wound to the leg. The 18-year-old man arrived at Intermountain Medical Center in Murray with a gunshot wound.
The man's injuries were not life-threatening.
Court records show Idrees pleaded guilty in December to a 2017 misdemeanor assault case.
