SALT LAKE CITY — A bill that would have banned smoking and tobacco use on the Utah Capitol grounds was snuffed out Thursday by the House.
HB155, sponsored by Rep. Bruce Cutler, R-Murray, sought to make the outdoor grounds of the Capitol off-limits for smoking, joining the indoor ban put in place in 1994 by the Utah Indoor Clean Air Act.
Rep. Val Potter, R-North Logan, asked who would enforce the law, to which Cutler replied: Utah Highway Patrol.
"I see a problem with that," Potter said. "The highway patrol has a big enough job to do and not be the smoke police.”
The House voted against the bill 27-43.
