SALT LAKE CITY — A GOP representative for a district in St. George resigned from his position Tuesday night, citing “immediate personal and family concerns."

Rep. Jon Stanard, R-St. George, sent a resignation letter to Utah House Speaker Greg Hughes Tuesday night, the speaker said Wednesday.

“Last night, Rep. Stanard unexpectedly resigned due to personal and family concerns,” Hughes said in a statement. “We will honor his request for privacy, and ask that others do the same. We wish Jon and his family the best at this time.”

The Associated Press reported Stanard was leaving to spend "a few weeks out of state" with his father, who has terminal cancer.

Stanard has represented District 62 since Jan. 2013. He was a part of the Higher Education Appropriations Subcommittee, as well as the House Business and Labor, House Revenue and Taxation and House Rules committees.

“It has been a great honor for me to serve the constituents of District 62 and with so many colleagues that I’ve grown to love and value,” Stanard said in his resignation letter. “I know many will be concerned, but I would appreciate respecting our privacy at this time.”
