SALT LAKE CITY — Police identified a Salt Lake City man who died after he was stabbed over the weekend, while his stepson was booked into jail in connection with the case.

Salt Lake City police said Johnny Postlethwait, 54, died as a result of a stab wound, and Charles Anthony Petrie, 30, was arrested on suspicion of murder.

Police responded to a report of a stabbing at a home located at 756 E. 1700 South shortly before 1 p.m. Saturday, according to Salt Lake City police.

A witness told police they heard the man scream and ran into his bedroom to find out what had happened. The witness then saw Petrie “on the victim’s bed with both of his hands on the knife pushing it down into the victim’s chest,” according to a jail report.

The witness told police they wrestled Petrie off Postlethwait, but Postlethwait was pronounced dead at the scene.

Petrie was taken into custody for questioning, according to the jail report. The report added that detectives observed that Petrie had “blood all over (his) hands, shirt and shoes.”

Court records show Petrie pleaded guilty to aggravated assault in 2017 in relation to a 2016 case.
