HERRIMAN — A former Herriman High School teacher is under investigation for allegedly sending inappropriate text messages to a 17-year-old student, police confirmed Thursday.
The texting allegedly started last school year and may have gone into the summer, said Unified Police Lt. Brian Lohrke. The girl graduated from the school last spring, he said. The former teacher has not been arrested and no charges have been filed against him. KSL has opted not to name him at this time.
The man, who taught history at Herriman High School, worked at the school from 2014 until Nov. 27, 2017, said Jordan School District spokeswoman Sandy Riesgraf. She said the reason for his departure, like any other teacher, is considered a personnel matter and is private.
While Riesgraf said she could not speak specifically to Unified police's investigation, she noted, "We would never tolerate any type of inappropriate behavior regarding a teacher and a student with a personal device or a district-issued device or anything like that. It would not be tolerated. We are here to protect students and keep them in a safe environment where they can learn and feel safe."
Riesgrief added: "We always encourage students who feel uncomfortable or who have heard something, say something, or they feel uncomfortable or in a situation that they are concerned about, to come forward."
The teacher previously worked at Providence Hall Charter School in Herriman until Jan. 8, 2013. The reasons for his departure were not disclosed.
