FARMINGTON — Construction of Farmington High School isn't quite complete, but area students have selected the mascot of the new school: the Phoenix.
Davis School District Board of Education named the new high school in June with community input but allowed students to select the school's mascot.
Other mascots considered were the Farmers, Eagles, Firebirds, Silverback, Fox and Silverfox, but Phoenix rose as the favorite.
Phoenix was "by far the favorite mascot" suggested by students from the neighboring Davis and Viewmont high schools, as well as by junior high students who will eventually attend the school, according to a school district press release.
According to Greek mythology, the phoenix is a bird that cyclically regenerates itself by rising from the dust, and it cannot be destroyed.
“We are one. We are the Phoenix,” said Farmington High School Principal Richard Swanson, explaining that Phoenix will be used in a singular sense.
The new school, located at 400 W. Glovers Lane, will open in the fall of 2018.
The selection of Farmington Phoenix builds upon tradition of most high school macots in the Davis School District that have alliterative names, such as the Davis High Darts, the Layton High Lancers, Bountiful High Braves and Woods Cross Wildcats.
The new high school is part of the $298 million bond proposal approved by voters in 2015.
