SALT LAKE CITY — Attorney General Sean Reyes became the latest Utah politician to sign on to a court brief supporting a Colorado baker who refused to make a cake for a same-sex couple's wedding.

Reyes joined attorneys general and leaders in 20 states in a friend-of-the-court brief in the Masterpiece Cakeshop v. Colorado case pending before the U.S. Supreme Court. The brief argues that the compulsion of speech is constitutionally forbidden.

Shop owner Jack Phillips refused to create a cake for the wedding reception of a gay couple who were planning to marry in Massachusetts, citing his religious beliefs. The couple, Charlie Craig and David Mullins, pursued discrimination charges and won before a civil rights commission and in the courts. Phillips appealed, and the Supreme Court agreed in June to hear the case.

Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, and 22 Utah states senators earlier signed on to a brief siding with Phillips as did The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
