SUMMIT COUNTY — The Summit County Search and Rescue is looking for a missing 74-year-old man who never returned from a day hike Monday near the Crystal Lake trailhead, the Summit County Sheriff's Office said.
Arizona resident Melvin Heaps left to hike the trail but failed to return by nightfall when he was expected back, his family told police. Search and Rescue began looking for Heaps early Tuesday morning at midnight. More crews responded at 5 a.m.
Some hikers reported seeing Heaps yesterday while hiking, and the man's vehicle was located at the Crystal Lake trailhead, police said.
Heaps is a Caucasian male with brown hair and blue eyes. He is 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighs 175 pounds. Heaps is believed to be wearing a red long sleeve shirt and blue jeans with suspenders, according to police. He typically hikes with a straw hat.
The Department of Public Safety has dispatched a chopper to help look for Heaps.
