SALT LAKE CITY — It’s the halfway point of the season in high school basketball. Where has the time gone?

Region races are shaping up, and it’s hard to argue for a tighter race than in Region 4, where Lone Peak survived Pleasant Grove in our Game of the Week — thanks to a timely officiating call against the Knights’ Steven Ashworth, who sank a game-winning free throw as time expired.

In Region 8, Maple Mountain handed Springville its first loss in region play, 63-53 and Copper Hills took down rival Brighton, 51-48 in a Region 3 thriller.

Tuesday night featured a monster girl’s basketball game between top-ranked and undefeated Alta and Mountain View, but the Bruins got 26 points from Lavender Briggs to hand the Hawks their first loss of the season.

We also sit down with Deseret News columnist Amy Donaldson to give an update on the Utah State Board of Education’s newest proposal that would dramatically affect high school transfers. We ask her if the rule is bound to stick. For a complete recap of the board’s latest decision, read Donaldson’s story on DeseretNews.com.
