DRAPER — Fremont’s girls soccer team talked about a streak.

Every year, it seemed, the Region 1 side would make it into the Class 5A state playoffs and every year they’d fall in the quarterfinals, or — as in last year to eventual champion Davis — fall in the semifinals.

The streak ended Tuesday afternoon.

Katelyn Allen scored the only goal of the match in the 16th minute, and goalkeeper Morgan Green made it stand up as the Silver Wolves (16-1-1) slowly pulled away from Region 4 champion American Fork, 1-0 at Juan Diego Catholic High School to advance to the Class 5A state championship match.

“They play a lot of the same style as we do,” Fremont coach Kelly Parke said of American Fork, which fell to Fremont 2-0 on Oct. 10. “I think our speed just kept them off the ball. We were able to keep the ball a lot of the time because we had so much more speed than they did. That’s a really good team.”

Fremont’s Karstyn Peterson whipped in a shot from the right side that headed on frame, but American Fork goalkeeper Savanna Empey batted down the save — right to Allen. The senior team captain wasted no time, putting the ball in the back of the net with one side-footed effort to give the Silver Wolves all the scoring they needed.

“I didn’t know what was going to happen, but I knew I needed to be right there,” Allen said. “The keeper made a save, it deflected off of her, and I got it in.

“I didn’t expect it, but you have to be ready for anything. If you are in the right spot, be ready for it.”

The Cavemen (16-3) nearly equalized less than three minutes later, but defender Randie Nicholas cleared a loose ball off the goal line as the last defender back.

Fremont played possession ball the rest of the way, using a combination of short, one-touch passes and speed on the counter-attack to slowly pull away from the Cavemen.

“It is tough to beat a team twice, especially a team that plays basically the exact same style as you,” Parke said. “That’s a really good team, with some strong, powerful players in the middle of the field. But we held on.”

Brooklyn Vogelsberg had American Fork’s best chance of the second half with 10 minutes remaining, running onto the end of a through-ball 30 yards from goal before Green snuffed out the chance to preserve the shutout.

The Silver Wolves will face defending state champion Davis (19-0), which has won 42 matches in a row, in the 5A final Friday at 4:30 p.m. at Rio Tinto Stadium.

“We know we are ready for that next game,” Allen said. “We’re ready for it. I’m so excited.”

Davis 6, Copper Hills 0 — At Juan Diego, Mikayla Colohan scored two goals to help the Darts rout the Region 3 champion Grizzlies for their 42nd-straight win.

Davis (19-0) opened the scoring just under two minutes in when Ally Olcott’s attempt near the end line deflected off the goalkeeper for a goal. Colohan scored her first marker at the half-hour mark, and Olivia Wade gave the Darts a 3-0 advantage just nine minutes into the second half.

Kate McMaster and Lindsey DiReda each added a goal in the final 20 minutes for Davis.

CLASS 4A

East 2, Woods Cross 1 — At Juan Diego, Emily Jensen scored her second goal of the match with just 15 seconds remaining to help the Leopards (13-4-2) hold off Region 5 foe Woods Cross.

Camryn Henson gave East a 1-0 advantage just 18 minutes into the match.

Timpview 5, Skyline 0 — At Juan Diego, Reserve forward Dakota Smith notched a hat trick to help the Thunderbirds eliminate the defending 4A champions.

Marren Nielsen notched the shutout for Timpview (15-4-1).
