PROVO — Big transportation improvements are coming to Provo's west side as the new Lakeview Parkway opens this week and will help with traffic and future growth.

The road will officially open on Thursday afternoon and, for the first time, it will provide a quick and easy route to the Provo airport and the growing neighborhoods in southwest Provo.

“It is a big benefit for connectivity, it is a big benefit for the airport, and it is a big benefit for safety getting across these two roads,” said Provo Mayor John Curtis. “It also has a beautiful trail along the side of it, so for pedestrians and bicyclists, it is also a nice addition to our city."

The scenic and smooth Lakeview Parkway begins near the Provo Municipal Airport and travels 3 1/2 miles to I-15 at the University Avenue exit, near the Provo Towne Center.

Crews were finishing up work on the project that has been under construction for the past two years. The road also connects west side neighborhoods and provides new access to the freeway, in addition to the only previous option of Center Street.

The $39 million project was mostly paid for with leftover money from the I-15 rebuild, and city leaders say it will not only benefit Provo residents, but anyone wanting a direct route to the Provo airport.

To celebrate Provo's opening of the new Lakeview Parkway, a community event on Wednesday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. will give anyone the chance to ride their bike, jog or walk on the new road the day before it opens to traffic.
