(KSL News) The owner of a West Valley City business will pay $3 million in fines for violating the Clean Water Act.
Johnson Matthey Incorporated pleaded guilty to the federal charges yesterday for failing to properly report wastewater discharges.
The company refines gold and silver and was releasing pollution into to the Great Salt Lake and Jordan River.
Former plant manager Paul Greaves and former general manager John McKelvie pleaded guilty to charges of making false statements about the pollution. The Justice Department said the two screened water samples to hide the company's higher-than-legal discharges of selenium, which is toxic in large amounts.
