SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Salt Lake County Council have dropped the annual "First Night" New Year's bash from the top Zoo, Arts and Parks funding level to the 100 Tier Two funding groups.

The Legislature restricts the number of Tier-One funding groups to 23, and First Night came in ranked number 24.

First Night officials pleaded with council members yesterday to change their minds, saying that although the event is only one night a year, it impacts thousands of people.

Salt Lake Chamber head Lane Beattie said First Night is important to the community overall.
