SOUTH SALT LAKE — A 68-year-old man was shot and killed Friday night after a nearby resident went to investigate a noise he heard in his backyard, officials said.
Police responded to the area of 3730 South 200 East around 8:30 p.m. The resident, 37, told them the 68-year-old confronted him and was armed with a knife. The "confrontation quickly escalated," and the elderly man was later pronounced dead at the scene, according to South Salt Lake Police Sgt. Gary Keller.
The man killed was later identified as David Antonio Trujillo. Police said they have not found a current address for Trujillo, but know he did frequent various hotels/motels around in South Salt Lake.
Police have not determined a motive why Trujillo was armed with a knife in the back yard of the residence where the incident occurred.
The 37-year-old resident was one of the first people to call 911 and is cooperating with the investigation, Keller said. The name of the person that was confronted byTrujillo will not be released at this time, police said.
The case is under investigation and no arrest has been made. South Salt Lake Police said when the investigation is completed, the case will be turned over to the Salt Lake County District Attorney's Office for screening.
Police are investigating the incident and have not made arrests.
