5A boys basketball: Shoemaker, Bingham top Copper Hills for first title in 10 years

SALT LAKE CITY — Schyler Shoemaker and Dason Youngblood each scored 16 points, and the Miners pulled away from Region 3 rival Copper Hills, 61-44 for their first Class 5A state title since 2006 Saturday at the Huntsman Center.

Samuta Avea added 11 and three rebounds for Bingham, and Youngblood also chipped in three assists and three steals.

BYU commit Yoeli Child supplied nine points, 14 rebounds and four assists for the Miners, who faced Copper Hills for the fourth time in 2015-16.

Shoemaker scored his 16 points on 7-of-8 shooting, and earned 5A tournament MVP honors in the win.

Preston Sanchez led Copper Hills with 12 points, and teammate Charlie Olsen added 10 points and eight rebounds.
