WEST JORDAN — One man is dead and another is injured after police say an 18-year-old driver, possibly under the influence of drugs, ran a red light and crashed into them.
The crash occurred about 7 p.m. Sunday when the 18-year-old, driving east in a Toyota pickup, hit a northbound Nissan Altima at the intersection of 5600 West and 7800 South, West Jordan Police Lt. Richard Bell said.
Witnesses reported the pickup ran a red light and hit the Nissan, Bell said. Police are investigating whether the 18-year-old was under the influence of drugs.
"With the driver of the pickup truck, there may have been an impairment issue," Bell said. "There was evidence at the scene that is leading us to believe that may be a factor."
The driver of the Nissan, a 77-year-old West Jordan man, was pronounced dead at the scene, Bell said. Police did not release the man's name Sunday night.
Both the driver of the truck and the 68-year-old passenger in the Nissan were taken to area hospitals with injuries that were not life-threatening.
Traffic was restricted as police investigated the crash and cleared the scene. Road closures were expected to be lifted by 10 p.m.
The accident remained under investigation Sunday.
