Hot Temps Can Bring on Dehydration

Dina Freedman ReportingIf you step outside, you can't miss it, summertime is here in full swing and with that comes heat and reminders to drink a lot of fluids.

No doubt, it is HOT everywhere you go! It's hot in the afternoon and it's still hot even into the evening.

Yesterday we talked about air quality, which is still an issue today; but another problem with the heat is dehydration and remembering to drink enough water.

We could see our first time flirting with 100 this weekend and that means it's time to be water-wise about the weather.

Jana Flindt: "I'm constantly drinking. Try to remember to drink water, otherwise, I get a headache and I'm not a happy camper."

She's got it right, she's got water and so do the kids. If you do have to go outside this weekend, it's not a big problem, just find yourself a nice, shady spot and drink plenty of water.

Hot Temps Can Bring on Dehydration

We asked the professionals about this, the guys that are out there, working in the sun no matter how hot it gets.

Phillip Lambson, Roofer: "We take like milk jugs, gallon milk jugs. We freeze a milk jug about three-fourths full of water in the freezer. Fill the other quarter up with water in the morning so it melts throughout the day. So it's cold water. And then we take another gallon jug with us and that usually will do a crew of three for about six to seven hours."

We remind everyone to drink water because getting dehydrated won't be a walk in the park.

Terry Henrich, Registered Nurse: "With adults though, mostly it's a headache, thirsty. And if it gets more severe, it can be confusion, dizziness."

And if you stop sweating and become irritable, or someone in your group is, make sure everyone is filling up.

Terry Heinrich: "If you're on a long run, a long bike ride, if kids are out playing soccer, they're drinking more sports drinks, a lot of times they dilute them and don't drink them full strength."

Phillip, the roofer, also told us that even though it seems simple, wearing a light colored hat really helps out in the sun.

These seem like simple rules but sometimes we just don't think about it as much as we should

Today with the Red Alert for air quality, exercising in the heat of the day or even early evening isn't smart; and as we head into the weekend, just with the heat alone, it's not a good idea either.
