PAROWAN, Utah (AP) — Police in southern Utah have captured and released a young mountain lion seen near an elementary school.

Authorities say the 4-month-old cat may have lost its mother and wandered in the town of Parowan looking for food Monday.

Police Chief Ken Carpenter says officers tracked the cat with a hunting dog after it was seen near Parowan Elementary school. He says the mountain lion climbed a tree and police kept it there until state wildlife officers arrived.

The Spectrum newspaper in St. George reports that Department of Wildlife Resources officers lassoed the cat, tranquilized it and released it far from the city.

Parowan is located about 230 miles southwest of Salt Lake City.
