MIDVALE — A two-car accident connected to a shooting shut down northbound State Street for several hours Friday night.

A husband and wife were driving in a pickup truck shortly after 6 p.m. when the female passenger suffered a fatal gunshot wound and the truck hit another vehicle near State Street and 7800 South, said Unified police detective Jared Richardson.

Police said many unanswered questions remained Friday night and they had not classified the shooting as either a suicide or a homicide.

The truck and the car it hit went through a fence and stopped when it crashed into the exit of a restaurant, Richardson said.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Two occupants in the car were taken to an area hospital with minor injuries while the man driving the truck, who was not hurt, stayed on-scene to talk to investigators.

"The driver is here, he's not free to go," Richardson said. "We're not calling him a suspect, but we want to make sure all our T's are crossed and I's are dotted."

Police were uncertain which way the truck was traveling and whether the gunshot or the crash occurred first, Richardson said.

The names of those involved will not be released by police because of the nature of the accident.

Northbound State Street was closed at the site of the accident while police investigated. The road remained closed for several hours.
