SALT LAKE CITY — One of life’s most pleasing combinations is enjoying good weather and a good book. Summer is the perfect time to sit down — whether at the pool, the beach or your own backyard — open a good book and get lost in the story.
Here are my picks for everyone in the family — some favorite classics, others new must-reads.
Little readers (0-8)
- “Balloons Over Broadway: The True Story of the Puppeteer of Macy’s Parade” by Melissa SweetThis fabulous nonfiction picture book tells the story of the original balloons of the famous Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in engaging multimedia illustrations.
- “The Dark” by Lemony Snicket and illustrated by Jon KlassenFrom one of the world’s favorite authors and one of our favorite illustrators comes a tale of how Laszlo stops being afraid of the dark.
- “The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore” by William JoyceKids will be enchanted by this must-have picture book for everyone who loves books.
- “Grandpa Green” by Lane Smith’Tis the season for things growing in the garden. This sweet tale of a garden that tells a story is perfect for families to share together.
Young readers (9-14)
- “Pippi Longstocking” by Astrid LindgrenEvery girl should read this hilarious tale of a quirky girl named Pippi who isn’t afraid to be herself.
- “Splendors and Gloom” by Laura Amy SchlitzThis Newberry Honor winner is a must-read for all who love mystery, magic and wonder.
- “Case File 13: Zombie Kid” by J. Scott SavageHumor, mystery, good friends and, of course, zombies. Hand your boys this entertaining read this summer.
- “Wonder” by R.J. PalacioThis multi-award winning book is heartwarming, real and funny. A great choice for boys and girls.
Teen readers (15-18)
- “On Little Wings” by Regina SiroisThis young adult novel is everything a teen novel should be: rich, spirited writing, gorgeous settings, strong families, journeys of self-discovery and the beauty of first love. And clean content.
- “Mind Games” by Kiersten WhiteNew from New York Times best-selling author Kiersten White, this psychological thriller is a fast-paced delight.
- “Ender’s Game” by Orson Scott CardIf your teen plans to see the new movie this summer, hand him the book first. This fascinating science-fiction has been a best-seller for more than 20 years.
- “The Maze Runner” by James DashnerIf you son (or daughter) has not yet read this unique, thrilling series, be sure to get it for him this summer.
Adult readers (18 +)
- “Fairy Godmother’s Inc.” by Jennifer WardellThis witty, romantic retelling of Cinderella is the perfect light, entertaining summer read.
- "Shadow on the Crown" by Patricia BracewellWith everything from war and betrayal to forbidden love and sweet romance, "Shadow on the Crown" is one of the best historical fiction novels out there.
- “Frozen in Time: An Epic Story of Survival and a Modern Quest for Lost Heroes of World War II” by Mitchell ZuckoffFrom best-selling nonfiction writer Mitchell Zuckoff comes a new book that will keep readers anxiously engaged in one of history’s lost stories.
- “Micro” by Michael Crichton and Richard PrestonMichael Crichton’s last, unfinished manuscript has been completed by author Richard Preston. Some Crichton fans love it, some don’t. Read it and decide for yourself.
