SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Democratic delegates picked two women to fill vacancies in the Utah House and Senate.

Karen Mayne was selected to fill the District 5 Senate seat for Kearns, West Valley City and Taylorsville. Mayne takes over for her husband, the late Sen. Ed Mayne, D-West Valley City, who died last month after a battle with lung cancer.

Rebecca Chavez-Hauck was chosen for the House District 23 seat vacated by Salt Lake City Mayor-elect Ralph Becker.

In speeches to delegates, both women called for legislative reform, a free transit system and passage of an animal cruelty bill.

The new lawmakers will be sworn in prior to the star of the 2008 Legislature in January.
