LAS VEGAS — A former colonel with the United States Air Force has accused the U.S. of covering up evidence related to extraterrestrial visitations.

Col. Charles Halt said at the Smithsonian-affiliated National Atomic Testing Museum in front of an audience of 200 people that he is "firmly convinced there's an agency, and there's an effort to suppress."

Halt was stationed at RAF Bentwaters military base in England in Dec. 1980 when three UFO-related events allegedly occurred at Rendlesham Forest. Strange lights were seen outside RAF Woodbridge and a "strange glowing object" was seen in the forest. The next day, depressions were found in the ground, and radiation was present. A red light was later seen moving through the forest.

Halt said he has heard people say the U.S. should appoint an agency to investigate claims of UFO sightings, but one already exists: "a very close-held, compartmentalized agency that's been investigating this for years."

"There's a very active role played by many of our intelligence agencies that probably don't even know the details of what happens once they collect the data and forward it," he said, according to the Huffington Post.

Another speaker at the event was retired Air Force Col. Bill Coleman, who was chief spokesman for Project Blue Book from 1961 to 1963.

Project Blue Book was part of a systematic study of UFOs conducted by the U.S. Air Force throughout the 1950s and ‘60s. The project came to a halt in Jan. 1970.

"We were moving at maximum continuous power for the B-25, about 300 miles an hour, and we got right down to the treetops and I closed in on it very rapidly," he said. "I said I was going to overtake it -- 'Hang on and put your seat belts on' -- and I made a hard 90-degree bank to try and pull up alongside of [the UFO] and it wasn't there.

"I zoomed up about 1,500 feet, and then I could see the object right on the deck over a freshly plowed field moving at a pretty good speed, and it (was trailing) two vortexes."

The conference promised to reveal UFO secrets from highly vetted sources within the U.S. government and military, according to the International Business Times.
