DAVIS COUNTY — Davis High School's marching band director wins a High 5 this week for going "above and beyond" in providing students with the experience of a lifetime.

Steven Hendrick is preparing to take 290 students to perform in the Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, Calif., for the second time.

"It's a lot of work but we have amazing parents who do a ton of work for us, and the kids are great. They understand what they have to do and they take care of it," he said.

Hendrick has been a band director for 23 years.

"There have been some amazing times that I remember over the years," he said, "but this group is really special."

He shared his secret for keeping this many students focused.

"I admit to them straight up that if they talk, I lose. And if I lose, we all lose," he said.

Our High 5 partners at Les Schwab presented a gift basket as part of the award. If you'd like to nominate someone for a High 5, do so here.
