Gene Kennedy Reporting Three children are safe this morning after police say their father threatened to kill them. The man allegedly told his estranged wife he was going to drive the kids off a cliff.

That threat led to an Amber Alert. But not long after that was issued, police found Christopher Young and his children inside a crashed car at the bottom of the Point of the Mountain.

The kids were traumatized but okay, and the father told police he did not crash the vehicle on purpose. He says it was an accident.

But last night, he allegedly told his wife he was "taking the kids to heaven."

Young and his wife are divorcing and she said he told her, if he couldn't have the kids neither could she.

At one point, Adella Young talked with her husband on his cell phone and heard her kids screaming in the background.

Adella Young, Mother: "I could hear them talking in the background. They kept saying, 'Mom we're on a cliff and a big grassy field. We can see lots of cars. We're going to go over the mountain. We're going to go over the mountain. We're going to go to heaven.'"

It never came to that.

Police got on the phone and convinced Christopher Young to tell officers where he was. Young was taken into custody and spent the night at a hospital for evaluation.

The children, ages six, four, and 20 months, are safe with their mother this morning.

Adella Young, Mother: "As fast as they worked, I really appreciate everything they did."

Adella Young says her husband had threatened to do something like this before. She never thought he was serious. But she knew last night was different.

Once the husband's evaluation is complete, authorities will decide whether he should face charges.
